Lot Essay

Initially painted in a style closely related to the landscapes of his fellow townsman Jacob van Ruisdael, whereas his later works show the influence of Philips Koninck. The foreground of the present lot still reveals his Haarlem origin, while the atmospheric perspective of the extensive river valley view recalls the work of Koninck.
