BOOK OF HOURS, use of Paris, in French and Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, c.1530].

156 x 119mm. i + 127 + i leaves, COMPLETE, modern foliation 1-127 in pencil followed here, ruled space: 105 x 77mm. SIXTEEN LARGE MINIATURES WITH FULL OR PARTIAL SCATTER BORDERS (slightly cropped, smudging to frontispiece). 18th-century red morocco gilt (lightly scuffed and cracked, lacking clasps and catches).

PROVENANCE:
(1) MLLE DE MONTAURON, perhaps Marie de Montauron, illegitimate daughter of Puget de Montauron (d.1664), the extravagantly profligate financier at the court of Louis XIII who was both a generous patron of the arts (it is to him that Corneille’s Cinna was dedicated) and the butt of many a contemporary satirist’s jokes. She married Gédéon Tallemant, son of Gédéon Tallemant de Réaux (1619-1692), author of the Historiettes – a collection of often sharply witty biographies of his contemporaries: early 17th-century illuminated title-page on f.1. (2) HERBERT CLAIBORNE PELL JUNIOR (1884-1961): his bookplate. Bought from Théophile Belin in Paris in 1923 (see De Ricci, Census, II, p.2136, no 4).

CONTENT:
Title-page f.1; Calendar ff.1v-13; Gospel extracts and prayers ff.13v-19; Hours of the Virgin, use of Paris, ff.19v-65v; Hours of the Cross ff.66-69; Hours of the Holy Spirit ff.69v-71v; Seven Penitential Psalms, Litany, and a prayer for a king ('Rex noster') ff.72-85; Office of the Dead, use of Paris, ff.85v-118v; Suffrages and prayers in French ff.119-127.

ILLUMINATION:
A RICHLY ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT AND A FINE, VIBRANT EXAMPLE OF THE WORK OF COURT PAINTER ETIENNE COLLAULT (fl.1523-1541). The expressive, gesticulating figures with crisply delineated features and the colourful backdrops are hallmarks of his dramatic and engaging style. Each miniature is accompanied by a full or partial border of liquid gold inhabited by birds, insects and flowers. Collault worked for the King and Court in Paris and was paid in 1523 and 1528 for the illumination of twelve copies of the Statutes of the Order of St Michel.

The subjects of the miniatures are as follows: St John f.13v; St Luke f.15; St Matthew f.16v; St Mark f.18; the Annunciation f.19v; the Visitation f.34v; the Nativity f.43v; the Annunciation to the Shepherds f.47v; the Adoration of the Magi f.51; the Presentation in the Temple f.54; the Flight into Egypt f.57; the Coronation of the Virgin f.62; the Crucifixion f.66; Pentecost f.69v; David in prayer f.72; Job on the dungheap f.85v.
