437 x 280mm, 57 leaves, APPARENTLY COMPLETE (the folios disbound in places, tattered at the edges, lightly soiled). Original velvet binding (worn, evidence of the original ties). Provenance: (1) apparently in family possession until at least the mid-19th century. (2) 20th-century bookplate of Van der Veen – Hondius.

A HANDSOME GENEALOGICAL COMPENDIUM BY THE BRABANT HERALD OF ARMS, for presentation to the Dutch courtier, Cornelis van Aerssen (1545-1627). In addition to genealogical tables tracing the descent of the Aerssen from the illustrious Counts of Meurs, Pierre de Launay presents elaborate ‘proofs’ of lineage: copy charters dating back to the 14th century with attractive copy-seals – apparently extracted from original documents in archives at the Abbey of Campen, at Nimegue and Venlo, and at Brussels Town Hall – alongside highly-decorative elements comprising an illustration of the 15th-century carved effigies on the tomb of Theodore d’Aerssen and Marguerite de Carpen at the Abbey of Campen [Kamp; destroyed in 1586], with coloured armorials, decorated initials and a detailed map of the Duchy of Guelders. This impressive manuscript is signed and certified by the Brabant Herald of Arms, Pierre Albert de Launay. Knighted by Charles IV, duke of Lorraine, and raised to heraldic officialdom, alongside the production of authentic genealogical manuscripts, Pierre was known to be active alongside his brother, Jean, in the sale of false ennoblement documents; the latter was condemned to death for these forgeries in 1687.
