DICKENS IN AMERICA. A resounding success in spite of a hostile press and troubles with ticket touts, Dickens' second reading tour of America from December 1867 to April 1868 was to leave him physically exhausted – lame in his right foot from his insistence on walking long distances in the deep snow, this perhaps exacerbated by a sledding outing recorded in Central Park – and pining for Nelly Ternan. By the end of his punishing 76-date tour, solid food had been cast aside in favour of eggs beaten in sherry, but his appearances had been feted in literary circles, as well as netting him £19,000. 26 February found Dickens between readings at the Tremont Temple, Boston.
