THREE RARE DICTIONARIES IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING. EDITIO PRINCEPS of Hesichius' and Pollux's works and an improved second edition of Suda's Lexicon. Hesychius' text was edited by Marco Musuro from a manuscript Aldus had acquired and wanted to publish himself. It deals mainly with words that exist in unusual forms or have more than one meaning; it also quotes many passages from lost works by orators, poets, historians and medical writers (Staikos). The main aim of the Greek Index of Julius Pollux was to supplement the range of lexicographical works available to students, and it provided a wide survey of Attic usage, with a good deal of information about the culture of classical Athens. The third work, which was published for the first time in 1499, was based on a different manuscript than the first edition with often better text and several new additions. Adams H-509, P-1787, S-2062; Ahmanson-Murphy 54, 119, 122; Dionisotti & Orlandi LXXXIV, XXXIV, LXXXI; Hoffmann II 261, III 260, III 461; Renouard Alde, 66:3, 32:11, 70:1; Staikos I, 348.
