8° (152 x 95mm). Italic type. Aldine device at end, 3-line initial spaces with guide-letter, with blank l2. Variants include misspelling 'Alaghieri' on a1v and headlines from a2v as 'Inf.'. (Title and quire H partly remargined, a few repairs, small hole in H3 effecting a few letters.) Burgundy morocco blind-tooled to a gothic design by Gruel, signed, the covers with dragons in blind at the top and bottom edges, and fleur-de-lys within lozenges, gilt edges, slipcase. Provenance: inscription washed from title and final verso – Clemente Barini (17th-century title inscription).

FIRST ALDINE EDITION, second issue. It contains the first use of the Aldine dolphin-and-anchor device, and is the first edition of Dante in small format, published as part of Aldus's pocket-editions for scholars. Adams D-83; Ahmanson-Murphy 59.5; Renouard, Alde 34:5.
