DÜRER, Albrecht (1471-1528). Institutiones geometricae. Translated from German by Joachim Camerarius. Paris: Christian Wechel, 1532.
2º (312 x 209mm). Woodcut on a4v repeated on Q3r, another block on Q2r, woodcut diagrams throughout, B1 and H4 printed recto and verso with full-page blocks, diagrams 59 and 61 in part 4 with pasted-on extensions. (Some light browning, marginal tear to H1, K1 and quire O, piece torn from lower margin of L6, quire P with light staining at inner margins, lacks the final leaf with Wechel device on verso.) 17th-century vellum (slightly bowed).
FIRST EDITION of Joachim Camerarius’s translation of Dürer’s Unterweisung der Messung (Nuremberg, 1525), the work which ‘first presented to northern Europe the completely new attitude to artistic creation which had crystallised in Italy during the Renaissance.’ The four German and five Latin editions published up to 1606 are testimony to its importance. Dürer’s immediate object ‘was to explain the application of practical geometry to drawing and painting and to teach the principles of perspective. These methods were to be applied to architecture, painting, lettering and ornamental forms in general’ (PMM). The application of geometrical principles to the construction of letters is particularly interesting, and at the end of book three a whole gothic alphabet is created from small geometrical forms.
