Born in Qingdao in 1936, Tang Jian was initially trained in traditional Chinese expressive brushwork. He then combined this with the more meticulous method of traditional painting (gongbi) to create a new painting style. Tang Jian’s paintings are often characterized by vivid expression and bold outlines with unique application of color to achieve a more meticulous rendering of details.
