Lot Essay
Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr (d.1071 AD) was born in Xativa in Andalusia, in 978. He was a Sunni Maliki scholar who studied at Cordoba. His main works are on the three Sunni jurists Malik ibn Anas, Al-Shafi’i and Abu Hanifa and “The Comprehensive Compilation of the Names of the Prophet’s Companions”.
Although the whole title of the present work is not recorded in Brockelmann, he lists two works by the author as follows: Bughyat al-mu’anis and Bahjat al-majalis wa ‘uns al-mujalis. This present volume is probably a compilation of both works. See Brockelmann, GAL, I., 367; S., I., 628.
This copy is very similar in its calligraphic style and layout to a manuscript of al-Qarawani, Kitab al-miftah wa irtiyah al-arwah dated June 1461 AD which sold at Christie's South Kensington, 24 April 2015, lot 262. It is likely that the present manuscript was copied around the same time.
