TIBET, 15TH/16TH CENTURY
The pot-bellied figure, seated in lalitasana on a single lotus bases atop an ornate cushion, his right hand holding coral while his left rests on a mongoose, wearing a thick silk dhoti and scarf, his face with protruding eyes, smiling lips and goatee, his earlobes elongated with earrings, with a jeweled crown set in front of his chignon, heavily gilt overall, base sealed, and with an inscription on the verso

Lot Essay

One of the twelve Yaksha Generals from the mandala of Medicine Buddha, this sculpture is part of a fifty-one piece set of sculptures. Compare with another example possibly from the same set (U. von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, p.454, fig.125B), and four others from this set, which sold at Christie’s Paris on 8 June 2010, lot 378.
