Lot Essay

For Syrian libation spoons, carved in steatite with comparable lion-head iconography and dating to the 9th-8th century B.C., which most likely formed part of the ritual equipment alongside bowls such as the present lot, cf. R. Merhav (ed.), Treasures of the Bible Lands: The Elie Borowski Collection, Tel Aviv Museum, 1987, nos 120-121, and E. Rehm, Kykladen und Alter Orient, Karlsruhe, 1997, pp. 158-159, S 83 and 84, abb. 345-8.
