The horses with conjoined inner fore and hind legs, and ridged manes, the horseman grasping the manes with both hands, with details in added black, green and red

Private collection, Europe, acquired in the 1960s; and thence by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

Denis Haynes, the former head of the Department of Greece and Rome at the British Museum, suggested that this was a schematic chariot group, the rider, a charioteer, identified by his red belt and cross-straps on his back (private correspondence).
