Private collection, Europe, acquired prior to 1980; and thence by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

Denis Haynes, the former head of the Department of Greece and Rome at the British Museum, suggested that the soft, fleshy modelling of the arm might indicate that it came from a statue of Dionysus, the hand once holding a thyrsus (private correspondence).
