Lot Essay

Howard Chandler Christy was twenty-five when he was sent to Puerto Rico and Cuba as the chief illustrator for Leslie's Magazine to cover the Spanish American War. Christy’s series of Theodore Roosevelt, Rough Riders and other military personnel ran as an especially popular portfolio entitled Men of the Army and Navy in Collier's Weekly in 1899.
