Lot Essay

This newly discovered picture of Maria Clementina, the mother of Charles Edward Stuart and Henry Benedict Stuart, relates closely to her official portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, commissioned from Francesco Trevisani in 1719. The present lot most likely dates from the same period, and would appear to be the only such portrait of Maria Clementina on a copper support and on this small, more intimate scale.

We are grateful to Dr Karin Wolfe for confirming the attribution to Trevisani and for her kind assistance in cataloguing the present lot. The picture will be published in Dr Wolfe's forthcoming catalogue raisonne on the artist.
