150 x 114mm. 139 leaves, collation impractical (see Content), written space: 100 x 65mm. ONE HISTORIATED INITIAL with border and numerous illuminated initials with borders throughout (lacking a number of leaves of text – see description below – including some likely with historiated initials, light marginal staining and cockling, some fading to text, historiated initial on f.112 smudged, rubrics often crossed out). CONTEMPORARY SPANISH blind-tooled leather over wooden boards (scuffed and rubbed, especially spine, lacking clasps).

PROVENANCE:
(1) From the style of illumination and the saints in the Calendar and the Litany, it is clear that part of the codex was produced in the southern Netherlands in the mid-15th century. The manuscript must soon after have travelled to Spain – or have been owned by a Spaniard – given the Spanish rubrics, script and added illumination. The original southern Netherlandish manuscript is augmented and enhanced with later 15th-century texts (the added variants to the Hours of the Virgin, or the expanded Office of the Dead, for example), and all are bound together in an early 16th-century Spanish binding. (2) ‘Casa-Torres’, no 7484: sticker and inserted loose note. Possibly the Marquis of Casa-Torres.
