PASTEUR, Louis (1822-1895). Autograph letter signed ('L Pasteur') to Dr Raffer, Institut Pasteur notepaper, September 1889;
with pencil emendations, writing with advance warning about an article that Pasteur owes to one Monsieur A. Grove, who will likely need Raffer to translate it ('Grove aura probablement recours à vos bons offices'), and discussing an article of Raffer's that Pasteur must regretfully decline to use – although 'il ... m'aurait évité, dans mon triste état de santé, une grande fatigue' – but which he stresses is very good and reassures Raffer that they will have plenty of opportunity for the latter to publish under his name, then re-iterating his desire that Raffer should be the one to translate Pasteur's own article, one page, 8vo (180 x 130mm), framed with a printed portrait of Pasteur.
Raffer may have submitted an article for the Annales de l'Institut Pasteur, founded in 1887. The first volume of 53 articles began with a letter from Pasteur to the periodical's editor, Emile Duclaux, celebrating the fact that he is 'rendering a service that will be appreciated by the ever increasing number of young scientists who are attracted to microbiological studies. In your Annales, our laboratory research will of course occupy a central position, but the work from outside groups that you intend to publish will be a source of competitive stimulation for all of us'.
