Second edition of the first serious study of the legal rights of the British colonists in America, published the same year as the first printing in Philadelphia. After their initial publication in The Pennsylvania Chronicle, at least eight editions were issued in the colonies and abroad. Dickinson was one of the leading colonial statesmen to advocate a peaceful reconciliation with, or separation from, Great Britain. In these essays, however, he first admitted that the use of force might be both necessary and justified.
