The Nautilus is possibly the most recognizable wristwatch made by Patek Philippe. Inspired by the shape of a ship's portholes, it was designed by Gérald Genta as Patek Philippe's answer to Audemars Piguet's enormously successful Royal Oak, ironically also a Gérald Genta design. Originally marketed as the most exclusive steel sports watch one could own, it continues to be extremely popular due to its large, flat and simple aesthetic.

The present watch is known as the 'Jumbo' Nautilus as of large case dimensions. The reference 3700 was produced from 1976 to at least 1998 with the steel versions only available until circa 1987.
