Lot Essay
Eugene Von Bruenchenhein's (1910-1983) extant body of work began shortly after his marriage to Eveline “Marie” Kalke in 1943, when their home became his studio, his canvas and his museum. During the decade following his marriage, Eugene photographed Marie, documenting the intimacy between the young couple. This hand-colored gelatin silver print reveals that Von Bruenchenhein conceived of his work in color despite employing a black-and-white printing process.
