2° (625 x 455 mm). Elaborate engraved allegorical title by Jan van Vianen (after the original by P. La Pautre after J. Berrin), manuscript table of contents, engraved table of comparative nautical scales, 31 engraved double-page charts of the coasts of northern and western Europe. (Lacks title and preliminary pages, some light dampstaining to lower margin.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, triple fillet border along sides, central coat-of-arms of Clément Charles François de Laverdy on sides, spine in 8 compartments, gilt lettered in second, others with floral design (a few small scratches). Provenance: Clément Charles François de Laverdy (1723-1793), French statesman (binding, close to but not identical with Olivier 36 fer 1).
Later printing of the "Neptune Francois" by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) in Paris. Bellin was since 1741 the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine, the French Hydrographical Office. All the maps in the 1773 edition contain the mark of the Depot de la Marine and a price note (“Prix trente sols”), neither of which appear on any of the maps in the present volume. Thus the present copy probably represents an intermediate stage in the development of Bellin's edition of the Neptune François dating to sometime between 1759 and 1773. Brunet I:756; See Koeman M. Mor 1-8.
