Le Neptune François ou Receuil des Cartes Marines. Levées et Gravées par Ordre du Roi. Premier Volume, Contenant les Côtes de l' Europe sur l' Océan, depuis Dronthem en Norvege, jusqu'au Détroit de Gibraltar, avec la Mer Baltique. Paris (Versailles): de l' Imprimerie du Département de la Marine, 1773.
2° (640 x 480 mm). Elaborate engraved allegorical title by Jan van Vianen (after the original by P. La Pautre after J. Berrin), inserted contents leaf (“troisieme volume,” see below), printed title at top of 6 pages of text, engraved table of comparative nautical scales, 2 pages headed “Remarques sur les cartes du Neptune François… 1753,” 31 engraved double-page charts of the coasts of northern and western Europe (map 11 in duplicate). (Some light dampstaining to upper and lower margins, small wormhole to lower right corner.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, triple-fillet border along sides, central coat-of-arms Charles Just de Beauvau on sides, spine in eight compartments, gilt-lettered in second others with floral design (a few scratches, light wear to spine ends and corners). Provenance: Charles Just de Beauvau (1720-1793), French scholar, nobleman and general (binding, close to but not identical with Olivier); Lord Wardington (bookplate, his sale Sotheby’s London, 10 October 2006, lot 321).
Later printing of the "Neptune Francois." The maps in the present edition are after Jacques Bellin's revised version, issued in 1753, with two additional maps showing the western half of the Gôlfe de Gascogne and the general map of Brittany. All the maps in this 1773 edition contain the mark of the Depot de la Marine and a price note (“Prix trente sols”). This copy contains an added contents leaf, possibly specially printed for this copy, after the engraved title, showing the correct contents of the present edition under the caption “Table des cartes contenues dans le Neptune François.
