SEUTTER, Matthaeus (1678-1756). Atlas novus sive Tabulae geographicae totius orbis faciem. Augsburg: Seutter, [ca. 1735?]
2° (525 x 310 mm). Engraved hand-colored title, inserted table of contents pasted over original, 29 double-page engraved maps ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND COLORING. (Some minor marginal staining.) Contemporary paper-lined brown sheep, upper cover with title stamped in silver (some rubbing to spine).
The first edition of this atlas (with 16 maps) was published in 1720. The maps include the World, Europe, Asia, Africa and America, maps of all the European countries, and a map of the Holy Land. The number of maps in each atlas was variable according to the wishes of the purchaser. The table of contents of this copy is pasted over an older table of contents containing 50 maps. Seutter was apprenticed to J. B. Homann in 1687 in Nuremberg, then worked as an engraver for the publisher J. Wolff in Augsburg, before setting up his own map and globe business in the same city.
