8° (198 x 121 mm). 8 engraved folding plates, 2 hand-colored. (A few pale spots.) Contemporary tree calf, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering-piece (covers slightly bowed, head of lower joint just starting.)
FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR at the end of the preface. Willaumez was a member of Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux’s expedition of 1791-93 to find missing explorer Jean François La Perouse on the Recherche (see lot 434). In 1819, he was promoted to the rank of vice-admiral, and then set out to compile his Dictionnaire, which quickly became a standard work; it was issued in at least three editions. EXCEEDINGLY RARE: according to sale records, only one copy of this work can be traced at auction in the last 50 years; WorldCat lists only 5 institutional copies. Quérard X, p. 515; not in Brunet.
