THE MCMAHON-HUSSEIN CORRESPONDENCE
Correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon ... and the Sherif Hussein of Mecca July 1915-March 1916 [with a map]. [Cmd. 5957.] London: HMSO, 1939. 8° (244 x 153mm). 18pp., folding colour-printed map. (Light marginal creasing throughout.) Stapled self-wrappers (upper cover unevenly soiled). Provenance: light pencil annotation throughout, with a cutting from the Times about the publication loosely inserted and similarly annotated). [With:] Report of a Committee set up to consider certain correspondence between Sir Henry McMahon ... and the Sharif of Mecca in 1915 and 1916. [Cmd. 5974.] London: HMSO, 1939. 8° (244 x 153mm). 51pp. (Tiny marginal nick to one leaf.) Stapled self-wrappers (tiny marginal nick to lower cover). Provenance: American Jewish Committee (cancelled stamp on verso of title).
FIRST PUBLICATION OF THIS FAMOUS CORRESPONDENCE. During WWI, Britain managed to commit to three mutually contradictory policies: a) the Sykes-Picot Treaty, whereby Britain renounced its claim to Syria in deference to France; b) the Balfour Declaration of support for a Jewish National Home in Palestine; and c) pledged support for Arab self-determination and self-government via the McMahon-Hussein correspondence. The second-named work is the report of the Maugham committee, set up during the London (or St. James's Palace) Conference of 1939, to determine the nature of this correspondence, and gives the British and Arab positions on the promises of independence made to the Arabs during WWI, and of their relevance to Arab rights in Palestine. Khalidi & Khadduri 1533 and 1539.
