Lot Essay

First established in 1847 at 6, rue Saint-Benoît, Eugène-Paul Caillaux moved in 1856 to 7, rue de Lesdiguières, place de la Bastille. He was recorded as ébéniste, marqueteur, fabricant de meubles genre Boulle, réparation de bronzes dorés ou cuivrés ou couleurs, vernis, réparation de meubles Boulle, marqueterie de bois.

The present bureau plat is not an exact replica of a ‘Boulle’ model but incorporates many features familiar to his oeuvre, such as the espagnolettes heading the legs and the Apollo masks to the sides. Rare, only one other example of the exact model is known, dated to 1855 and with a leather inset writing top in place of the superior marquetry top to the present bureau, sold Christie’s, London, 1 October 2003, lot 64. A closely related bureau plat by Sormani was sold, Christie's, London, 23 February 2006, lot 102 (£14,400), and a further example was sold, Christie's, London, 26 October 2000, lot 14 (£19,975).
