A LARGE ZITAN BRUSH POT, BITONG

Carved from one piece of wood, the brush pot has a separately made plug in the base, and the unusually thick walls are imperceptibly waisted. The fine grain of the wood is highlighted by the lustrous patina on the exterior.
7 ½in. (19.2 cm.) high, 8 ½ in. (21.5 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The thick walls combined with the subtle profile imbue this brush pot with an elegance that belies its large size. The patina, or finish, appears to be very old, if not original, which is unusual, especially for zitan.
