A RARE PAIR OF LACQUERED WOOD LATTICE SCREEN PANELS
17TH-EARLY 18TH CENTURY
Each rectangular, openwork panel is composed of intersecting slender wood members covered in dark red lacquer that radiate from a central calyx motif in the center of a barbed quatrefoil motif to the foliate spandrels at the corners.

Lattice screen panels of this type created a decorative element of separation while at the same time allowing the merging of contrasting spaces.
The quatrefoil in the center most likely represents a persimmon calyx motif, shidi wen, a decorative motif used in China from as early as the Han dynasty.
