COLES, William (1626-1662). The Art of Simpling. An introduction to the Knowledge and Gathering of Plants. London: printed by J.G. for Nath: Brook, 1656.
First edition, apparently a mixed issue, with E4 uncancelled in this copy (as in first issue), cut containing other second issue cancels (except a1—see below). The second part, entitled Perspicillum Microcosmologicum: or, A Prospective for the discovery of the Lesser World, has separate dated title-page.
Two parts in one, 12mo (128 x 70 mm). With the printed errata leaf (a4), but without the a1-a3 containing dedication (lacking in some copies, see Hunt, p. 289). (Title margin browned with a chip on blank fore-margin, last leaf laid-down with slight loss of headline text, a few headlines or some pagination shaved.) Contemporary calf (worn). According to Hunt the dedication-errata gathering (a4) was printed separately on paper having vertical chain lines, and apparently inserted after the original sheets for the rest of the book were printed.” Provenance: J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps (1820-1889), noted Shakespeare scholar (label on rear pastedown). ESTC R209440 ; Hunt 266; Wing C-5089.
