Lot Essay

Made in 1966 and preserved in very attractive, original overall condition, the present “Evil Nina” is an early example of the celebrated chronograph, featuring the applied steel “U” on the dial as opposed to the printed version of later series. It is furthermore distinguished by the unusual bezel calibrated for 200 units per hour instead of the tachymetre scale commonly found on the model. To date, only one other Compax model with such bezel is believed to have appeared in public.

While the famous racing driver Jochen Rindt wore a Heuer Autavia reference 2446 with such regularity during the 1960s that collectors now simply refer to it by his surname, his stunning partner Nina’s name also became synonymous with a model of Universal Geneva with black on white "panda" dial. Collectors in recent years have called this inverse version the “Evil Nina” as a result of its black dial with white registers and red accents.
