2° (306 x 209mm). Additional engraved title, 114 illustrations. (Title lightly browned, small paper flaw in margin of G3, Qq2 misbound at end and some small ink spots on verso shining through on recto, very light worming in lower margin of last 2 leaves, occasional very light browning.) Contemporary sheep, spine gilt in compartments (lightly rubbed), modern slipcase. Provenance: J.A. Freilich (bookplate; sold at Sotheby’s New York, 11 January 2001, lot 404).
SCARCE FIRST EDITION. ‘A richly illustrated description of a typical seventeenth century Italian museum which was the hobby of a wealthy collector. Assembled by the Veronese antiquary Moscardo over some 30 years in the tradition of the humanist's "studiolo," it contained a wide variety of objects described in an introductory verse by a visitor to the house as forming "a world in themselves." The Moscardo collection incorporated the collection of Francesco Calzolari of Verona, which was one of the earliest private museums in Italy. The first section describes and illustrates his antiquities … The second section lists over 100 minerals as well as petrified objects and fossils. The final section comprises corals, shells and preserved aquatic creatures’ (Schuh, Bibliography of Mineralogy, online). Nissen ZBI 2898.
