2° (301 x 195 (313 x 188 mm). Title and a few leaves printed in red and black, woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut diagrams in text, leaf with volvelles, intended to be cut out, inserted after Lll3. (Some leaves browned or a little spotted.) Contemporary vellum, modern manuscript title on spine (warped, spine wormed). Provenance: bookseller’s label.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Edited by the Dutch mathematician Frans van Schooten, this collection of Viète's mathematical works does not include the Canon mathematicus. The editor apparently misinterpreted a remark of Viète's about the unsuccesful edition of 1579 and chose to omit the work. Van Schooten (c.1615-1660) is best known for his preparation of the first three Latin editions of Descartes's Géométrie. Brunet V, 1212; Norman 2152; Willems 609.
