Lot Essay

Consigned by a distinguished private collector, the present reference 5004 is already considered a modern classic. In essence, this reference derives its features from the reference 3970, which itself is based on the legendary reference 2499. However, reference 5004 steps up a gear in terms of complication by boasting the highly complex split seconds function. Reference 5004 is roughly one millimetre larger than reference 3970 and also easily recognizable by its split-seconds pusher in the crown.

Production of reference 5004 was launched in 1994 and is today discontinued. Patek Philippe replaced it with two other much slimmer and smaller platinum split-seconds chronograph references: the cushion-shaped reference 5951 released in 2010 with in-house calibre CHR 27-525 PS Q and the reference 5204, released in March 2012 at the Baselworld with in-house calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q.

Furthermore, the present watch is preserved in excellent overall condition and comes complete with Certificate of Origin, additional case back and box. It is a rare occasion for the eager collector to become the proud owner of one of the most iconic and groundbreaking models in Patek Philippe's modern production.

Reference 5004 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 312.
