STELLER, Georg Wilhelm (1709-1746) and SCHERER, Jean-Benoît (1741-1824). Beschreibung von dem Lande Kamtschatka. Frankfurt and Leipzig: Johann Georg Fleischer, 1774.
The posthumous first edition of Steller’s account of Kamchatka and the Alaskan coast. Steller was the first natural scientist to set foot in Alaska, part of Vitus Bering’s Great Northern Expedition. He survived the shipwreck and scurvy which decimated most of the crew and continued to explore the Kamchatka peninsula. His sympathies for the native people of the region eventually led to his arrest and trial for fomenting rebellion, and he died soon after being freed. Following Steller’s notes is Müller’s account of Kamchatka with a Koriak-German glossary. Howes S-934; Lada-Mocarski 21; Tourville 4332; Wickersham 5827.
Octavo (200 x 117mm). 2 engraved folding maps, 12 engraved folding plates, engraved vignette on title page, woodcut illustrations throughout (marginal repairs to several engravings; one gathering with lower margins partially or completely cut away, one of which is repaired). Modern half vellum. Provenance: Brandenburg-Preußisches Hausarchiv (stamp) – Landesbibliothek (duplicate stamp) – Lokuschewsky (stamp) – Barbara Grigor-Taylor, Bookseller.
