[With:] STRAHLENBERG, Philipp Johann von (1676-1747). Nova descriptio geographica Tattariae Magnae. Strahlenberg, ca 1730. Engraved map in 2 sections, mounted on boards (706 x 1031mm).
The first edition of the most important early source on the history and culture of Siberia, with map mounted separately on board. Strahlenberg, a Swedish soldier-adventurer, was taken prisoner at the the Battle of Potalva and spent thirteen years captive in Siberia. He spent his captivity studying the language, geography, and culture of the region, the results of which were published on his return to Sweden in 1730. In addition to being the first to suggest the Ural continental border, Strahlenberg’s work on Tartar dialects was groundbreaking. Highly influenced by the utopian linguistic theories of Leibnitz, he titled his table of Siberian languages “The Harmony of Language.” Cordier 2713; Cox I, 194; Howgego S179.
Quarto (229 x 178mm). 10 engraved plates, two large folding plates of a polyglot table and a cave map, frequent woodcut illustrations throughout the text; contemporary marginalia in German and Latin (repairs to bottom and corner of title page; large folding plan heavily browned with repairs; engraved plates very clean). Contemporary calf gilt with red morocco spine label. Provenance: William Reese Co.
