NOOTKA SOUND CONVENTION – Convention between His Britannick Majesty and the King of Spain: Signed at the Escurial, the 28th of October, 1790. London: printed by Edward Johnston, 1790.
The very rare first edition of the document in which Spain officially relinquished its claims to the Western coast of America. This copy is in English and French—some are in English and Spanish. The first of three conventions aimed at preventing war between Spain and Britain over their overlapping claims in the Pacific Northwest, The Nootka Sound Convention established that settlements already existing for purposes of trade were not to be disturbed. ABPC and RBH record only three other copies at auction after the Streeter copy in 1969. Streeter sale 3488.
Quarto (215 x 170mm). Woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut ornament. Later wrappers. Provenance: Maggs Bros. Ltd.
