ANDRÉE ARCTIC BALLOON EXPEDITION – A handkerchief. Sweden, 1896.

A colorful printed handkerchief commemorating Salomon Andrée’s first attempted balloon voyage to the Arctic. The text reads “Lycklig Resa! Valkomna Ater! (”Happy Travels! Welcome Back!”), so that supporters could use it to both wave the expedition off and welcome it back home. Andrée was forced to turn back early and the expedition’s meteorologist found that the balloon needed to be replaced. Refusing to take this advice, Andrée’s second attempt resulted in tragedy when the balloon and her crew was lost North of Spitzbergen.

362 x 375mm. Color printing on cloth (a few spots, slightly faded). Provenance: Ralf Eigl.
