Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Vacheron Constantin, the present watch was manufactured in 1950.

This reference 4537 is one of the exceedingly few examples of this rare model to appear in public. It is furthermore distinguished by its very good, original overall condition. The superb “monochrome yellow” effect of all the elements of this particular watch is very striking, the dial retains its original lacquered surface and beautifully raised hard enamel signature along with applied Arabic and baton gold numerals on a contrasting machined ring that catches the light to great effect. Collectors particularly appreciate the large 38 mm. diameter of the reference 4537 because it makes it such a wearable vintage watch today.

The reference 4537 featured in Vacheron’s catalogues from 1950 to 1955 although manufacture ceased in 1953. In fact only 504 examples were made in total, the yellow gold being slightly rarer with 246 pieces made as opposed to 258 in pink gold. All the watches of reference 4537 featured subsidiary seconds but had different dial colours and configurations. The case is unusual in design and very pleasing to the eye with its raised lugs apparently attached to a small border to the enlarged bezel.
