The present watch represents state of the art watch manufacturing from the heyday of complicated timepieces. Uniting two main complications, a split second chronograph for timing purposes and minute repeating for the night-time hours, it is furthermore enhanced by the substantial pink gold American case with hidden hand-setting lever under the bezel, the highly finished movement and its excellent overall condition.
The firm C.H. Meylan in Le Brassus, Switzerland, was founded around 1880 by the renowned Swiss watchmaker Charles Henri Meylan (b. ? – d. 1916). Meylan lived in New York for some time where he worked also for American watchmaking firms such as Waltham. He was granted several US patents, mainly for chronographs, his speciality.
C.H. Meylan’s watches were reputed for their outstanding quality, receiving numerous awards including a First Prize at the 1894 Geneva Observatory timing contest.
