Lot Essay

According to traditional Chinese thought, the three most important goals in life are the propitious blessings of happiness, prosperity, and longevity, of which the Chinese shou character for 'longevity' is depicted in both the central medallion and the border design of the present carpet. This same symbol also appears within the central medallion of lot 297, a triple medallion Khotan rug.
