ASCETICISM – Manuscript containing a treatise on ascetic practices and other theological topics. Naples, 1469.
A fifteenth-century theological treatise signed and dated by the scribe. The scribe, Joannis de Ripis, may be the same individual who edited Aegidius’s De corpore Christi theoremata for the 1481 Bologna edition. The text, which bears some similarities to manuscript 2245 in the Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, is arranged by subject, with short sections on “de ornamentis sacerdotis”, “de humiliate”, “de nutritoribus carnis” and “de sibillis.” A table of contents appears on leaf 69, after which the text continues on a variety of topics, some for particular days, and including a section on Mary Magdalene.
Quarto (215 x 144mm). 96 leaves (apparently lacking first section, foliation begins with f. 26). Initials, paraphs, chapter headings, and foliation in red; one section canceled in red; all on paper with watermark Briquet 5575 (first leaf backed with paper obscuring first page of text; light worming, some leaves repaired at inner margin). Later stiff paper longstitch binding (a few threads loose).
