Lot Essay
Robert Daws (or Dawes), cabinet-maker and upholder of 17 Margaret Street, Cavendish Square, patented his 'Improved Recumbent Chair' in 1827, and the design was illustrated in J.C.Loudon, Encyclopaedia of Cottage Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833, fig. 1913. An very similar chair by Daws is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pg. 176, fig. 282.
