[OLAFSSON, Eggert (1726-1768) and Bjarni PALSSON (1719-1779)]. Voyage en islande, fair par ordre de S.M. danoise. Paris: Levrault, 1802.
First French edition of a comprehensive scientific account of Iceland and its inhabitants. Originally published in Danish in 1772, it was at that time the most significant survey of the country ever conducted. Anker 379; Brunet V, 1377; Nissen ZBI 3009.
Together 6 volumes, comprising: 5 text volumes, octavo (198 x 120mm) and one atlas volume, quarto (283 x 217mm). Half-titles in each text volume, atlas with 60 engraved plates, including one folding engraved map of Iceland (text: repaired tear into text in 19/2 in vol.5, repaired wormholes in lower margin throughout vol.5; atlas: some faint, unobtrusive waterstains, a few plates trimmed into platemark not affecting image). Contemporary leather-backed boards, spines with orange and red labels lettered in gilt (expert restoration to foot of vols.3 and 4; atlas volume in modern binding to style).
