Two drawings illustrate how a Sample Return Container (SRC) or “Rock Box” was stored for the flight to the Moon (right side) and where the astronauts would move the box to allow placement of gather lunar samples during the first lunar exploration. The entire device was known as the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA) and with the astronaut pulling a lanyard type device, it would lower from its stowed flight position to allow access by the astronauts on the lunar surface. The second device shown was the Lunar Transfer Bag which was designed to place items such as film, tools, and other important items either to or from the LM crew compartment via a long manually operated pulley system.
