BETA CLOTH EMBLEMS – Complete set of Apollo Beta Cloth space suit mission emblems plus two U.S. flags and one NASA emblem ("meatball").
Printed on Beta cloth and identical to the emblems sewn on the space suits used in the Apollo missions.
Beta cloth was the fire protection layer of the Apollo space suit utilized extensively after the tragic Apollo 1 spacecraft fire of January 1967. Made from Teflon coated fiberglass, the material would not ignite or burn when exposed to flames. The individual mission emblems were placed on the left breast of the Apollo flight space suit and the NASA emblem was placed on the right breast, then later on the right shoulder. The large United States flag was placed on the left shoulder.
14 total comprising 11 emblems for Apollo 7 to 17, varying from 7 inches to 9 inches square, with emblem sizes being approximately 3 to 4.5 inches in diameter; a 5 by 6 inch NASA emblem, affectionately known as the “meatball” and two U.S. flags on 5.5 by 7.5 inch pieces, with the larger flag image measuring 4 by 6 inches and the smaller 2.5 by 4.5 inches.
