Lot Essay

The historical Buddha appears here in the moment just prior to his enlightenment. The vajra before him is a reference to the Diamond Throne at Bodhgaya, where his enlightenment occurred. The diminutive size of this sculpture does not limit the amount of detail: the diaphanous patchwork robe is delicately draped over both shoulders and incised with ornate patterns throughout; the facial features, hands and feet are all finely cast.
