Lot Essay

The property of an important collector, the present watch has never been offered in public before. With its superb overall condition and extremely beautiful enamel scene painted by one of the greatest 20th century enamellists, it represents a wonderful trophy for collectors of rare timepieces.

The enamel is entirely hand-painted and signed by Mrs. Suzanne Rohr, one of the last great enamellists able to perpetuate the supremely exacting art of miniature painting on enamel. Specialising in portraits and works inspired by the old masters in a wide range of styles, Mrs. Rohr was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2017 and this year, the 2019 Prix de Gaïa, category Artisanat, Création (arts and creation). Since 1993, the Musée International d’Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds has presented the Prix de Gaïa award for special achievements in watchmaking. The award has been described as the "Nobel Prize of watchmaking". It is awarded in three categories: "Artisanat, Création" (arts and creations), "Esprit d'Entreprise" (entrepreneurship) und "Histoire" (history and research).

Since 1967, Suzanne Rohr has collaborated closely with Patek Philippe, reserving her talent exclusively for the company. An intensely private person, in her hands, the secret alchemy of enamel painting is used to endow these special Patek Philippe watches with an artistry and skill of unequalled depth and finesse. Each unique piece can take from a few months up to two years to complete.

For centuries, fine enamelling has decorated and enriched watches, jewellery and objects d'art. Patek Philippe maintains this rare craft of miniature enamelling, traditionally associated with the finest Geneva timepieces, and in many ways the most difficult of the decorative arts. These rare timepieces are unique pieces and made to special order with the subject matter chosen by the client. They often include reproductions of famous works of art, portrait paintings, celebrities or even family members of the future owner.

A selection of Patek Philippe’s pocketwatches embellished with enamel miniatures are on permanent exhibition at the prestigious Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, section "Enamelled and engraved pocket watches (1960-2000)", and illustrated in Patek Philippe Museum - Patek Philippe Watches, Vol. II, pp. 368 – 381.

Other examples of watches decorated with enamel miniatures by Suzanne Rohr are illustrated in Patek Philippe, Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, p. 168.

Johann-Jacob Wetzel (1781-1834) was a painter, draughtsman and author and one of the most influential and accomplished Swiss landscape painters of the 19th century. He worked in Zurich from 1810 and in 1827, Wetzel published a book “Voyage Pittoresque aux Lacs de Thoune, Brienz, Lungern et Sarnen“, with engravings of grand Alpine views, such as the present. His pupil was the Swiss-Italian artist Salomon Corrodi (1810-1892).
