Lot Essay
The exhibition was the last in a seven-city trans-continental exhibition tour and included works by Edward Burra, David Jones, Robert Colquhoun, Edward Bawden, William Coldstream, Henry Moore, John Piper, Eric Ravilious, Graham Sutherland, Stamley Spencer, John Tunnard, two works by Roland Vivian Pitchforth and Frances Hodgkins. The collection had been on view in Buffalo, Cleveland, Worcester, Toronto, St. Louis and San Francisco. The exhibition was organized by the Albright Art Gallery of Buffalo, New York and comprised fifty-eight paintings limited to the work of thirteen British artists. Forty-seven paintings were selected from British galleries by directors of the Tate and the National Gallery and by Clive Bell the art critic. The Albright Art Gallery chose other pictures from American and Canadian collections.
