Lot Essay

There are a number of paintings by Grant of the pond at Charleston, the artist’s home, in wintry conditions. Here the pond is icy, its surface emphasised by Grant’s use of a palette knife. The standing structure at left, known as the Gazebo, did not have long to live for it was blown down in the mid-1940s.

We are very grateful to Richard Shone for preparing this catalogue entry.
