Lot Essay
In the first months of 1960, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell decamped from their Sussex house to La Souco, the home of Dorothy and Simon Bussy in Roquebrune close to Menton on the French coast. On fine days they painted the precipitous views from the house perched on the hillside above Cap-Martin. Wet or cold days found them indoors painting still lifes such as the present work which records the oranges and lemons grown in La Souco’s garden.
